DENSE FOGS

THAI explains flight delays

Thai Airways International attributed flight delays in the past week mainly to dense fogs at Suvarnabhumi Airport, which forced the airline to land a number of flights at other airports.

Apinan Sumanaseni, president of the national carrier, said the change of landing spots cost THAI about Bt200,000-Bt400,000 per flight. He didn't provide the number of all flights affected.

A number of flights were diverted to Chiang Mai, Don Mueang and U-Tapao. Aside from financial costs, the diversion also disrupts the schedules.

"Weather conditions slightly affected THAI. Unable to land at Suvarnabhumi, the planes have been diverted to other airports until the conditions at Suvarnabhumi are clear. This results in additional fuel cost," he said.

THAI also recently adjusted the parts controlling system which resulted in maintenance delays. Apinan said the problems would be cleared and all schedules would be resumed from today (Jan 15) onwards.
