Allardyce leaves Newcastle after 24 matches

London (dpa) - Manager Sam Allardyce parted company with Newcastle Wednesday after just 24 matches in the job.

Newcastle won just eight of those games and, as disappointing performances racked up, booing became commonplace at St James' Park.

Allardyce's position was further undermined by the takeover that saw the man who appointed him, Freddie Shepherd, replaced by Mike Ashley.

The final straw came on Sunday, with a goalless draw against Championship side Stoke City in the FA Cup third round.

"This decision has been reached by mutual agreement," a statement on the club's website said.

Chairman Chris Mort said: "Mike and I would like to place on record our thanks for Sam's efforts and wish him well for the future.

"A new manager has not yet been appointed at Newcastle United. We will make a further announcement on the managerial position when appropriate."

First-team coach Nigel Pearson will take charge of the side for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Manchester United.
