Bert’s Cafe
For connected folks who find it impossible to live without their laptops, PDAs and other hi-tech gadgets, Bert's Cafe is the hangout for you.
A popular cafe chain in France, Bert's Cafe has opened its first branch in Asia - not in Tokyo or Singapore, but on the first floor of Bangkok's own Zen department store.
The main entrance hides in a corner of the store's cosmetics zone, but you can also gain access via the outdoor fountain area. Just look for the purple sign.
The cafe is known for its fresh and healthy menu, served fast in a lively and cosy atmosphere. Place your order at the counter and go get yourself plugged in at a table.
There are toasted sandwiches, club sandwiches, salads, soups, quiches and savoury puffs and pastries, plus desserts, coffee and tea, and set breakfasts and lunches.
The toasted sandwiches include country ham and cheddar with Dijon mustard and basil garlic aioli (Bt135) and prawns and tomato cocktail sauce (Bt135). Both of these come on a multigrain baguette.
Among the salads are a tuna nicoise for Bt95 and a carrot-pineapple-raisin concoction with yoghurt dressing for Bt75.
All preservative-free soups are made fresh daily and vary from one day to the next. The orange and carrot soup we had for Bt70 featured carrot sauteed with onion in olive oil and simmered in a homemade chicken stock, then pureed. Then orange juice is added. The result is smooth and light with a vibrant orange hue.
On the dessert list are blueberry cheesecake (Bt85), lemon tart (Bt75) and carrot cake. Enjoy these with iced tea flavoured with pomegranate, mango, lychee, caramel, passion fruit, mojito mint, raspberry, peach, green apple or hazelnut. They're Bt60 per glass.
