Lovely, cosy and useful!

An octet of clever celebs devise better furniture in a fund-raiser for the King's foundation

Published on December 30, 2007

Eight celebrities recently showcased their talents in furniture design in the exhibition "My Style, My Signature" at Bangkok's Gaysorn mall.

The event was organised by Modern Form Group to celebrate His Majesty the King's birthday. The eight furniture collections are limited to 10 pieces each and priced at Bt100,000. Proceeds from their sale will be donated to the King's Chaipattana Foundation with no deduction for expenses.

The designers were Korakot Srivikorn, Grace Mahadumrongkul, Dolchai Boonyaratvej, Takonkiet Viravan, Prapas Cholsaranon, Khunying ML Piyapas Bhirombhakdi, Sakchai Guy and Somchai Kaewtong.

Korakot, director of Gaysorn Land Asset Management, showed a fun side with her "Games of Life" concept. She's transformed an ordinary round table into a surface incorporating board games.

"This piece of furniture is inspired by the warmth and happiness I get from shared activities with my family," she said.

"I've created a chair with games inside. Each game was a favourite of mine when I was young. You might say this is a chair of memories."

Grace took time out from her job as vice-president of marketing for packaging firm Cosmo Group to design a coffee table titled "Tribes" decorated with the 12 zodiac signs.

"This furniture is inspired by people's fascination with beautiful hilltribe clothing. I've used ethnic things and the Nickel Chakra Zodiac as accessories."

Brandscape president Dolchai came up with the theme "Magic Dimension" for a smart workstation that uses space efficiently. It can be separated into three parts, and utilises the auspicious number 9: its length and width can be perfectly divided by nine.

Dramatist Takonkiet took his cue from the concept "Stage". His couch at home doubles as a workplace and bed, so he dreamed up a chaise lounge on which he can rest his feet while he's busy working or watching television. You can sleep on one side and keep writing utensils handy on the other.

Prapas works in film but is also known for his writing. He came up with "Chingcha Chaleang" ("A Swing at the Terrace"), which mixes the innocence of youth with a party atmosphere.

"It's inspired by my childhood dream of having a swing of my own so I wouldn't have to wait in line, combined with my wish to always have a cosy area to play, nap or welcome guests - the terrace."

ML Piyapas, a director of CB Holding, brought elegance to her creation, "Heritage". She transformed the traditional Thai stool into something chic.

Sakchai's "Green Power" is a personal work desk in a simple but cool style. His vintage-look desk has plenty of storage space.

Fashion guru Somchai had as his theme "Kai Sai Son Soong" ("Egg on High-heel Shoes"). The love seat mimics the form of an egg with legs resembled tall heels.
