Thirachai's tenure extended

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the extension of Securities and Exchange Commission Secretary-General Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala's tenure for another four years.

Thirachai's first term will end on Thursday December 27.

The extension is expected by Thirachai who said last week that he is likely to be granted another term - or at least the post of acting secretary-general - since the political situation is still in a transitional stage and the revised Securities and Exchange Act is still subject to approval by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

He said he would have to step down anyway eventually, once the new law has been approved and implemented. An independent board will then be set up to select a secretary-general for the SEC.
