Opponents of Chula U's autonomy to petition to Prem

Opponents to the ongoing move to transform Chulalongkorn University (CU) into an autonomous institute will Tuesday submit a petition to Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda, to ask him not to submit the CU bill for His Majesty's consideration.

They claimed that the bill was not clear and accurate and was against the Constitution.

Dr Sophon Roengsumran, head of the Network of Chulalongkorn University Community against CU autonomy, said on Monday that 30 members of the group would at 9.30am Tuesday submit the petition to Gen Prem at his Si Sao Thewes residence, asking him not to present the bill to HM the King.

He reasoned that the bill was not complete, was unclear, had many contradictions and was against many articles of the Constitution especially the article 142 (6) that stipulated the law content shall be revealed clearly and transparently.

He said the bill content on the website used the old version and there were many points remained unclear to CU community especially organic laws, which CU executives claimed to be complete but the network had not seen them yet and did not believe they were done.

Moreover, the group also wanted the bill to be reviewed, amended and undergone a public hearing for the CU community's acknowledgement and for accuracy, Sophon said.
