Madrid (dpa) - The condition of former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Guillermo Amor is now "stable", according to the Tortosa hospital where he is being treated.

On Tuesday evening the Verge de la Cinta de Tortosa hospital, in Tarragona province, issued a statement saying that road accident victim Amor was now in a "stable condition", though he was still on an artificial respirator and in the intensive care unit.

Amor, 40, crashed his Land Rover at around two o'clock on Sunday morning, whilst driving back to Barcelona after working as a television commentator on Saturday's Valencia-Barca clash.

He underwent en emergency operation on his damaged abdomen and it was feared that his life was in danger.

He has been visited by his family and by several Barca team-mates from the 1990s "Dream Team".

Amor was a holding midfielder for Barca from 1988 to 1998, when he moved on to Fiorentina, before winding down his career with Villarreal and Livingston.

He played for Spain at the 1998 World Cup finals and the 1996 European Championship finals.
