Chilling out

When you're ready for a cool break from the hot beach, think of the Library

Chilling out

The idea of a perfect vacation on Koh Samui has a lot to do with the sea, the sun and the sand. But for some vacationers, solitude and privacy also count. Here on bustling Chaweng Beach lies a compound where peace and comfort idyllically combine.

The Library looks like just another boutique hotel from the outside, but once you enter the premises all the street clamour and chaotic traffic immediately disappear. On this four-rai expanse of green grass and tall trees you can enjoy views of the beach on the horizon. Among the greenery are the accommodation units in only black and white, lining up on both sides of the lawn. With the motto "happiness is not complicated", the Library aims to offer chill-out vacations with a minimum of frills.

"We took the concept of a library from the behaviour of travellers," explains the Library's young and aspiring sole owner, Kasemtham Sornsong. "Your holiday could be packed with lots of activities and excitement, but sometimes you just want to read and relax. And the best colour that helps you relax is white, that's why we're all in black and white here."

All 26 accommodation units have a simple, minimalist style, yet are elegant in their own down-to-earth way. The rooms feature simple and graceful black and white furniture. "I find white very stimulating," says Kasemtham. "It soothes you, and at the same time triggers your imagination and creativity."

This is why the reading zone, dubbed The Lib, is also dressed in white. Located next to the red swimming pool and offering a full view of the gulf, the spacious white room is divided into two sections - a book collection and movies and music section. In the book section, one whole wall renders itself to a massive collection up to 1,000 books. Partly contributed by Kasemtham's personal collection, the selection of book ranges from arts, design and philosophy to light-hearted novels and short stories. Most books are in English; some are in Japanese and French. You can rest and read on a white lounge chair or on bar stools where you can look out for the greenery and the blue sky. As the air-conditioning in the rooms takes away from the on-island feeling, try reading outside on the porch or under the trees. The Library also provides Internet access through iMac.

Adjoining the library is another fun room with quite a collection of movie DVDs and music CDs. The choice includes Hollywood classics and award winning flicks to cheesy teenage movies and art films. The big flat screen with two headphones is available for two guests at a time. Only hotel guests can borrow books and CDs from The Lib.

While immersing yourself in a book, quench your thirst with a wide selection of drinks available at the nearby parlour, The Page. The poolside sanctuary offers various kinds of drinks. Available here is bourbon, whiskey, rum, liquor and standard cocktails (Bt80 to Bt250).

Energising mocktails are Bt100. Try the Library's refreshing smoothies (Bt130) with selections of mango, banana, vanilla and chocolate. Freshly brewed coffee is served for Bt90 to Bt130.
