Thais settle for 2 bronze in singles

Phuchong Sanguansin had a sad SEA Games swansong after going down to Gao Ning of Singapore 4-1 in the men's singles semi-finals.

The final day of table tennis proved disastrous for the hosts as Thai players had to be content with bronze, as their progress was cut short in the semi-finals in both the men's and women's categories.

Phuchong committed a series of errors to hand the Chinese-born Gao, ranked 11th in the world, a berth in the summit match. "I can't blame anyone but myself. I had entered the competition as the underdog. I had set my eyes on the bronze, but considering the form that I was in I should have finished better," Phuchong said.

It story of the second semi-final was nothing different for the Thais, as Phuchong's younger brother Phakphoom was upset by long-time rival Nguyen Nam hai of Vietnam.

In the women's category, experienced Nanthana Kamwong of Thailand was edged by Wang Yuegu of Singapore 4-2. Anisara Muangsuk also failed to qualify for the final, going down 4-2 to Ng Sock Khim of Malaysia.
