Puea Pandin Party leader Suwit Khunkitti yesterday vowed to push for Buddhism as the national religion if his party joins the next government, while Prachamati leader Pramuan Ruchanaseree said he would address the problem of Thais distancing themselves from temples.

Phra Phayom Kalayano, the abbot of Wat Suan Kaew, yesterday had a political discussion with the two party leaders and Watchara Kannika, a deputy spokesman of Chart Thai Party.

Pramuan said Thais nowadays were not visiting temples often and had a weaker relationship with places of worship than in previous generations. He said they preferred to go to malls and added that if they visited temples more often, they would fill their minds with Buddhist morals and avoid many problems.

Watchara said the party had many practical policies to promote Buddhism in Thailand and also support temples.

Phra Phayom said the discussion was organised to give a chance to small parties to share their vision.

Two weeks ago, Phra Phayom also had meetings with Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and People Power Party chief Samak Sundaravej.
