Royal grant for Bo Bae co-op

HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej yesterday granted Bt9 million for a plan to establish a cooperative for Bo Bae vendors, who will soon be allowed to resume their business.

"The Bo Bae Cooperative in honour of His Majesty will serve its members transparently and comprehensively," the cooperative's chairwoman Sodsri Somphan said.

Some 1,200 vendors have applied to be members of the cooperative - as it is a key condition for vendors who will be allowed to resume their business on footpaths along the Padung Krung Kasem Canal in the heart of Bangkok.

For decades, their stalls had done brisk business and were collectively called Bo Bae Market.

However, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) moved to remove the stalls and "return" the footpath to pedestrians.

That demand led to a clash between police officers and vendors, who complained of losing their livelihood.

To help the vendors, relevant parties have agreed to conduct a feasibility study to relocate the Bo Bae Market underground.
