Thais set for a joyous day

King will greet well-wishers at Throne Hall on 80th birthday

Published on December 4, 2007

On the occasion of his 80th birthday, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej will tomorrow greet well-wishers from the front balcony of the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall in what is set to be another memorable moment in Thailand's history.

No one can forget the resounding chants of "Long Live the King" on June 9 last year, as about one million yellow-clad people gathered in front of the Royal Plaza for a public audience that His Majesty granted from the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.

That precious moment took place on the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 60th year on the throne.

At 10.30am tomorrow, the beloved monarch will greet his loyal subjects on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Thais are expected to turn out in full force to wish His Majesty a very happy birthday.

As people from across the country head to Bangkok hoping to see His Majesty on his birthday, 100 people have earned a confirmed spot in front of the Sala Sahathai Samakhom. These fortunate few were chosen through a government project called "Do Good Things for the King".

A panel of judges, chaired by famous nun Mae Chee Sansanee Sthirasuta, selected the winners based on their virtues.

"It is a great reward. I pledge to do good things until I die," Niyom Kaewsaengruang said.

The 59-year-old man was chosen in recognition for his three-decades-long effort to disseminate his knowledge of Thai traditional medicine, Thai massage and Thai herbs. He has also established herbal gardens to promote interests in the subject.

Samrit Malai, 62, said he had long wished to see His Majesty but never expected he would get such an opportunity.

He was chosen for having swept roads in his hometown for over 20 years. He has never been paid for his service.

"Throughout my life, Their Majesties the King and Queen have been sources of inspiration. They have inspired me to fulfil my duties in all aspects," Samrit said.

Somkhuan U-domphon was rewarded with a chance to see His Majesty in person because, despite his physical disabilities, he is committed to encouraging teenagers in his hometown to play football rather than becoming addicted to illicit drugs or online games.

The project also rewarded 24-year-old Wiwat Bhadradhirakanta.

"I have never thought that what I've done for the public would give me a chance to see HM the King. I have always hope to meet His Majesty and this is a delightful surprise," Wiwat said.

He is now a company employee. However, during his years as a student, he initiated a project to get rid of shops selling alcoholic drinks near his university. He also formed a health assembly with other students and teachers to propose to the university executive policies for protecting their health.

They also cooperated with students from other universities nationwide to hold non-violent welcoming activities for freshmen, and succeeded in establishing a model library for academic institutions. Wiwat also provides advice to students who wish to undertake charitable activities.
