Four of them are key members of a militant group moving around the province's Tak Bai district, an official said.
A combined force of 400 military and police raided two villages in the district
in the early hours of yesterday morning after a tip off from local informants that a group of militants had moved into the area and were preparing to carry out acts of violence.
The four key suspects are Salah Rosohdo, Baharudin Waehaman, Mama Daoh and Manaseh Rosohdo. They were accused of killing police officers and many local residents over the past few months.
The raid was a part of a new push to contain the violence in the predominantly Muslim region that erupted at the beginning of 2004 and has killed more than 2,600 people so far.
A bomb exploded in front of a school in Yala's Bannang Sata district at about 9am yesterday. The premature explosion injured the bomber, police said, but he managed to escape.
The school director Bandit Siriphan said he saw two teenagers riding a motorbike. One of them planted the bomb in front of the school before it exploded.
