Chang optimistic on Chinese Olympic tennis despite split with Peng

Shenzhen, China (dpa) - Michael Chang says his relations with Chinese tennis in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics remains strong despite a break with top player Peng Shuai over training methods.

"We would butt heads on the time she put in to training, she probably thought that I was too strict," said the Chinese-American 1989 French Open winner on Friday.

Chang said that the Chinese number two behind Li Na "needs someone to travel with her.

"I just don't have the time to do that," said Chang, set to open a tennis academy in this economic boom areas just north of Hong Kong.

Peng beat both Amelie Mauresmo and Martina Hingis at September's China Open in Beijing.

Chang called his relationship with Chinese tennis mandarins "pretty good," adding that he is still hoping to work with the host nation at the Games.

"My heart is with Chinese tennis, if there's an opportunity to help the team then I'll take advantage of that."

The noted grinder said that Chinese players could do with more of the work ethic which helped his game.

"You prepare yourself as best you can so you are 100 per cent off the court and when you go out there you play 100 per cent on the court.

"If I was more heavily involved with the Olympic team it could be a chance for them to do well and maybe win multiple medals.

"There are things that could be improved," he said.
