"I don't want to believe that Muhammadyusoh Late was gunned down because he worked for my party as a volunteer," Waemahadi Waedaoh said.
About 20 days before his death, Muhammadyusoh received a threatening telephone call warning him to quit campaigning for the party, Waemahadi said.
Because of the killing, the party might have to adjust its strategy regarding the dispatching of volunteers to sway votes, he said.
"I might have to suspend campaign activities until safety is assured," he said, revealing that he narrowly escaped a bomb planted in his car shortly before the murder.
He said he received several threats designed to pressure him to bow out from the race.
He also attacked his opponents for their discrediting attempt by linking him to General Pallop Pinmanee, former deputy director of the Internal Security Operations Command who was responsible for the 2005 bloodshed at Krue Se Mosque in Pattani.
