US upset Cuba hopes

The United States edged out Cuba 6-3 yesterday, dashing Cuba's dream of clinching a 10th successive title at the 37th Baseball World Cup in Taipei.

The US team ripped 14 hits off seven Cuban pitchers, including Jayson Nix's solo homer off of Cuba's second relief pitcher, Yuniesky Maya Mendiluza. Earlier, Japan's starting pitcher Tadashi Settsu shut out the Netherlands to lead his team to a 5-0 win and third place.- Agence France-Presse

Oz beat Korea

Asian champions Australia beat South Korea on the opening day of the men's World Cup volleyball tournament yesterday in Saitama, Japan.

Asian bronze medallists South Korea were 14-13 up in the final set before Australia took control for a 22-25 25-20 23-25 25-20 29-27 victory. Russia beat Argentina 25-16 25-22 25-17, while Bulgaria stunned Spain 25-21 19-25 25-20 25-17.- Agence France-Presse

 

Ohio triumph

Ohio State deftly handled archrival Michigan 14-3 and earned consecutive outright Big Ten titles for the first time in 50 years in US college football. Jim Tressel became the first Buckeyes coach to beat Michigan six times in seven years. Chris Wells ran for a career-high 222 yards and the Buckeyes' defence dominated Michigan's banged-up offence.- Associated Press

 

Noguchi wins 

Japan's Olympic champion Mizuki Noguchi, 29, won the Tokyo international women's marathon in two hours 21 minutes and 37 seconds, thus securing a ticket to the Beijing Games next year.- Agence France-Presse
