PPP will ask NHRC to condemn EC

The People Power Party (PPP) insisted Monday it will file a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission against a decision of the Election Commission (EC) that banned 111 former executives of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party from involving in campaign activities.

Jaturon Chaisang, a PPP advisor and one of the banned TRT executives, said the EC decision had violated the Constitution Tribunal's ruling that only banned those executives from assuming political posts for five years.

As the EC had not issued an regulation to back its decision, PPP would not enable to ask the court to rule on the decision's legitimacy.

Meanwhile, The People Power Party voiced support on Monday for banned party executives to get involved with domestic and international human rights groups in the fight against the curbing of their campaign activities.

The Election Commission's (EC) prohibition for banned executives to make campaign speeches had impacted on campaigning plans, PPP spokesman Kuthep Saikrajang said.

The PPP had previously scheduled for banned executives, such as Chaturon Chaisang and Adisorn Piengket, to lead the campaign rallies, he said.

He urged banned executives to join Chaturon to petition for the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission and the Londonbased Amnesty International to overturn the ruling by the EC on Friday.

"The PPP will assist in every way possible for the 111 banned executives to restore their basic rights because the EC is not a court to rule on what is right or wrong," he said.
