HM leaves sister's bedside

Chants of "Long live the King" echoed across Siriraj Hospital yesterday afternoon as His Majesty waved and smiled to crowds of well-wishers.

Dressed in a plaid shirt and a blue blazer, His Majesty emerged from the Chalerm-phrakiat Building for the first time after he arrived on Tuesday night to stay close to his elder sister.

HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, 84, has been receiving treatment there for months after being diagnosed with cancer.

According to the latest announcement from the Royal Household Bureau, her overall condition is now stable. The Princess can sit upright in bed more often and for a longer time.

"She is able to proceed outside her room using a wheelchair," the announcement said. However, it added that medication, physical therapy and intravenous feeding were still being administered.

After the Royal Household Bureau announced that the King would return to the palace yesterday, thousands of people wearing yellow or pink shirts crowded around Siriraj Hospital to catch a glimpse of His Majesty. Yellow is the colour associated with the day of His Majesty's birth, while pink is widely considered as an auspicious colour for His Majesty. His Majesty was wearing a pink shirt and a pink blazer when he left Siriraj Hospital last week after being treated there since October 13.

"I saw His Majesty when he left the hospital on November 7. But I am here again because I really wish to see him and pray that he lives a long, healthy life," said Ratchanee Klakasikij.

The 53-year-old woman travelled from Nakhon Sawan to wait for a glimpse of the King since Thursday night.

"I will do whatever I can for His Majesty," she said.

His Majesty boarded a golf cart at the hospital's Chalermphrakiat Building at around 3.30pm and travelled to the Centenary Building, where he walked around with the help of a walking stick to pay respects at the statues of his late parents.

The King then left for the palace.
