Unpopular events may face the axe

[SEA GAMES] The 485 gold medals on offer at the Nakhon-Ratchasima SEA Games are likely to be trimmed down to 473 as some events are yet to receive the minimum number of entries

.

Dr Nat Intarapan, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Sports and Vice-Chairman of the 24th SEA Games organising committee, said after a meeting of the SEA Games Confederation Council that events with less than three participating countries must be excluded from the Games.

The 11 identified events spanning six games include those in which Thai athletes stand a good chance to win medals — including women's 48kg and over 75kg divisions in weightlifting and the women's team trap and skeet in shooting.

Individual equestrian events, which Thai riders were expected to dominate, are also likely to be scrapped as only the hosts and Malaysia have sent entries.  However, the issue will be decided at a meeting to be held tomorrow.
