Shares sale not to finance election: Thaksin's niece

Chinnicha Wongsawat insisted on Wednesday that the sale of her shares worth Bt176 million in Wyn Coast Industrial Park has nothing to do with her decision to run in the upcoming election.

Chinnacha, a niece of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and an MP candidate of People Power Party, said that the sale is simply a business decision. She said investors sell whenever it is the right timing to make the maximum profits from their investment. She noted that this is the right timing as election has shed hopes to the economy after the sluggish conditions.

She gave the comment after the Stock Exchange of Thailand posted "H" (halt) sign on the company's share trading on Tuesday, following the big-lot transaction for a 35.18 per cent stake.

"I insist that this transaction has nothing to do with politics. It's a pity that whenever anything happens to me, it's always linked to politics. We should separate business and politics," she said.

The transaction not only leads to a change in the shareholding structure, but also occurred when the anti-graft agency is getting tough on all politicians who could resort to illegal ways of raising money for the upcoming spending. Under the election law, each candidate is limited to spend no more than Bt1.5 million.
