University Presidents Council chairman Wanchai Sirichana said it would discuss the virtue assessment next month. He will allow universities to take account of students' virtue ratings during admission.
Obec secretary-general Khun-ying Kasama Varavarn na Ayudhya told a seminar yesterday a virtue score would be included in student reports. Obec will formulate the criteria so they can be used in the next academic year.
The grades, Kasma said, would initially take into account public service and "good deeds".
Kasetsart University at Kam-
phaeng Saen is already working with Nakhon Pathom education officials to find virtuous students.
Wanchai said the score could be considered as part of an overall assessment of students, explaining that if two students were equal academically, the virtue rating could tip the balance.
Once this rating system has been tested, it will be used in admissions.
National Legislative Assembly education committee chairman Chai-anan Samudvanija backed the virtue rating and urged schools to take note of their students activities.
But, there should be clear criteria how these are applied to university admission. Students should be rated over a three-to-four-year period, not a few days, he said.
Kasetsart University vice president Chawalit Hongprayoon said its first batch of admissions on its virtue quota were now in their second year. But it was too early to tell how they were performing, he said.
He said their academic performance was little different from other students but they were "noticeably more keen" on doing good deeds.
