Army 'will be neutral'

Army chief General Anupong Paochinda pledged yesterday that soldiers would maintain political neutrality during the lead-up to the December 23 election.

"My instructions to all Army units are clear: soldiers must be neutral," he said.

Anupong said the military would not get involved in investigating campaign violations unless asked to assist by the Election Commission.

The electoral process will be allowed to run its course without tampering, and soldiers will not dispense favours to any parties, he said.
