Isaan plagued by vote-buying: EC

Election Commission member Sodsri Satayatham said yesterday the Northeast was plagued with the highest number of complaints on campaign violations.

"Based on complaints filed, Isaan is seeing more cases of vote-buying than other regions," she said.

Sodsri said allegations were mostly about free trips for villagers in exchange for support as organised by village headmen acting as vote canvassers.

She also said a certain party relied on the underhand tactics of raising false claims for being bullied by the soldiers. The People Power Party earlier complained about a military ploy to block it from grabbing power.

Samran to run for Democrats

Lawmaker Samran Rodphet has resigned from his post in the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) to contest the polls under the Democrat Party banner in Bangkok's constituency 7.

Samran's resignation will take effect today to pave way for his campaigning in Bang Kapi, Saphan Sung, Min Buri and Lat Krabang. Samran was a well-known anti-Thaksin campaigner before he was appointed to the NLA by the junta.

Ruam Jai Thai to battle for Korat

The Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana Party vowed yesterday to launch an all-out campaign to try to capture 16 House seats via direct vote in Nakhon Ratchasima.

"Korat is my party's bastion to be defended 'til the death," party strategic adviser Suwat Liptapanlop said. Suwit said his party had a good chance of winning 12 of 16 seats from direct balloting and three of 10 seats via the proportionate vote in the province. The party has claimed it will win about 58 seats nationwide, including 35 from the Northeast and 20 from the North.

Pramuan joins Bangkok race

Prachamati Party leader Pramuan Ruchanaseree registered his party-list candidacy yesterday to vie for proportionate votes in Zone 6, which covers Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Nonthaburi.

He will compete with three other party leaders, Abhisit Vejjajiva of the Democrats, Samak Sundaravej of People Power and Prachai Leophairatana of Matchima Thipataya, for support in the capital.

His party has been assigned ballot No 19 - it was the only party to submit the names of 80 party-list candidates yesterday, the second day of the registration process.

Pramuan said his party would field about 200 candidates in the direct vote. He did not put a figure on how many seats his party would win out of the 480 House seats up for grabs.

"I don't have a stronghold but expect young voters to give my party a chance," he said.

The registration of individual candidates will start on Monday and be completed on Friday.
