Dee Sawaengcherdphong, 44, a driver for the mayor, was returning from a market in Narathiwat's Rusoh district at about 6am when two passengers on motorcycles fired 9mm and 11mm pistols at him while he slowed down make a turn.
Police said Dee had borrowed the car he was driving from Senior Sgt-Major Niphon Piewin of Rusoh police station.
The police sergeant might have been the real target, rather than the mayor's chauffeur, said Lieutenant Daenchai Munpom of Rusoh police, who inspected the crime scene.
In neighbouring Yala, Somsak Jaijetcham was working inside his furniture shop in Muang district in the afternoon when he was shot by one of two men getting off a motorbike in front of the store.
