Thai surfers look to make a big splash

[sea games] The Wind-surfing Association of Thailand (WATH) is hoping for another dominant performance by Thai surfers in the 24th SEA Games, to be held in Nakhon Ratchasima in December.

The surfing squad, which has always won the country laurels in the region's biggest sporting event, has set its sights on capturing four of the six gold medals in the windsurfing competition.

WATH is convinced that the first gold will be in the IMCO Lightweight category, which will feature the legendary surfer Arun Homraruen.

"Arun is very experienced and we are confident that he will win the gold. Among the participating nations, surfers from Indonesia are the strongest in this event. However, it depends on wind conditions. Strong winds will benefit Arun," WATH secretary-general Pattana Boonsawad said.

The second gold is anticipated in the women's RSX event, where Asian Games bronze medallist Napalai Tansai is the best in the Asean region. Gold medals are also expected from RSX-Open surfer Natthapong Po-nopparat and Ake Boonsawad, who recently finished runner-up in the Formula event at the World Championships.
