Bannawit quits military service to enter politics

Adm Bannawit Kengrien resigned from his position Tuesday of Defence Ministry chief adviser in order to contest the December polls although his disciplinary proceedings for insubordination will not be suspended during the campaign.

A senior military source said it is unclear which party banner adopted by Bannawit and whether he would run as a partylist candidate or via a direct vote.

Under the election law, state officials are entitled to quit the civil and military services to become electoral candidates and their departure can not be blocked.

Bannawit is under myriad probes relating to his critical remarks against the purchase of armoured vehicles and his involvement with political parties while in the military service.
