Korat Zoo wary of bird flu

Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo has stopped receiving donated birds due to the possible spread of avian flu, zoo director Banyat Insuwan said yesterday.

Vehicles entering the zoo will be inspected and their tyres sprayed with germ-killing liquid as a precautionary measure.  Banyat said birds could be donated to the zoo later this year.

The government-run zoo has more than 1,400 animals of 120 species under its care. Banyat said precautionary measures were being taken with animals, especially warm-blooded species, to cope with the drop in temperature in the cool season.

Birds living in cold climates migrate to warmer countries such as Thailand in winter. But the lack of a large water reservoir in Nakhon Ratchasima makes the province less attractive to migrating birds.

Banyat said domesticated animals would be occasionally exposed to sunlight while monkeys would be given vests to keep their bodies warm.
