SMEs less confident in outlook

Small and medium-sized enterprises showed a remarkable drop in confidence in September, when the confidence index staying at 41.3 points, due to the sluggish domestic spending, higher raw material costs and higher oil price.



 According to the Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion, the third-quarter index also dropped to 42.3 points.

 Jhitraporn Techacharn, the director-general of the Office of Small and Medium Enterprise Promotion, said that the trade & service sentiment index for September fell from 43.8 in August. Their confidence on the Kingdom's economy and their own business prospects also slid to 26.2 and 35.1, from 32.3 and 40.9, respectively.

 "They showed lower confidence due to the poor economic conditions, which hurt their sales and profits," Jhitraporn said.

 By sector, SMEs in all sectors showed lower confidence. Those which are hit the hardest are in the agricultural sector, retail trade, and retail oil business.
