NLA panel finds Surayud guilty over land holding

A sub-panel of the National Legislative Assembly's committee on police and justice Tuesday concluded that Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont illegally owned a plot of land in Nakhon Ratchasima as it appears to be part of a national park.

Krissakda Wattanapong, the panel's secretary, said Surayud's residence in the Khao Yai Thieng area, as appeared in an aerial map taken in 2002, was in the national park. Thus, the PM had violated the law on national park of 1964, he said.

Moreover, Krisana Preuksawan, director of the Forestry Department in charge of allocating plots of land in national parks, accepted that the Surayud's residence was located in the national park, Krissakda said.

Thus the sub-panel would ask the panel's members to consider its report before passing to responsible agencies including the police and the Forestry Department for launching charges against Surayud, he said.
