The militants got off three motorbikes and fired into a house belonging to Udom Thongpid, 53, killing him instantly. His wife, Prapa Thongpid, 49, was shot dead while trying to run away. Kriang Intarak, Prapa's 72 year-old father who lives in a house opposite, was injured by the gunfire as he tried to help his daughter.

The militants later burnt the house with Udom's dead body inside, police said.

In neighbouring Yala province's Yaha district, two local football players were shot dead while riding a motorbike back from a match on Wednesday evening, police said yesterday.

Sommartrohbee Kare, 28, and Panumad Jehsoh, 21, were found dead on the roadside on Thursday morning, some 10 hours after they died.

Local residents in the area heard gunfire but nobody dared to check the crime scene because of the 8pm to 4am curfew, police said. No one informed officials of the shots.
