Thai pair pull off stunner

[BADMINTON] Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thungthongkam took only 33 minutes to stun world champions Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir of Indonesia in the mixed doubles' first round at the Denmark Super Series in Odense yesterday.

The Thai duo, who are ranked 11th in the world, ended the Indonesian pair's dominance, which stretched to seven matches, with a comfortable 21-17 21-19 victory.

The Thai players will either face Pole Michal Logosz and Natalie Munt of England

or the pairing of Britain's Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier of Scotland in the second round.

In the men's singles section, Thailand's top player and world number 11 Boonsak Ponsana failed to avenge his defeat to Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland in the China Super Series in July, losing 21-19 21-13. The Pole now leads the Thai 2-1 head-to-head.

In the women's doubles, Thailand's  Duang-anong Aroonkesorn and Kunchala Voravichitchaikul failed to match up to Kumiko Ogura and Reiko Shiota of Japan, losing 21-18 21-9.

Thailand's Poompat Sapkulchananart, who trounced Australian Jeff Tho 21-5 21-6, beat Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark 13-21 22-20 21-19 and also routed Ville Lang of Finland 21-8 21-17 in the qualifying rounds, is to face Danish Kasper Oedum in the men's singles.

In the men's doubles, Sudket and Phattapol Ngernsrisuk will play Guo Zhengdong and Xie Zhongbo of China.
