Vieira and Totti injured in Champions League outings

Milan (dpa) - Inter Milan and Roma Wednesday were assessing damages to their mainstays Patrick Vieira and Francesco Totti after injuries suffered in successful Champions League outings on Tuesday.

Serie A champions Inter went top in Group G with a 2-1 come-back win at CSKA Moscow, but their may have lost midfielder Vieira for up to two months due to a pulled muscle in his left leg.

The towering French international, 31, left the pitch limping after 15 minutes with what appears to be an injury similar to those that have marred his season so far.

"We are very sorry for Vieira's injury," coach Roberto Mancini said. "But these things can happen when you return from a long injury layoff.

"It's a pity because Vieira is a real champion and for us he is truly important."

At Rome's Stadio Olimpico, a rough clash with Brazilian Liedson worried Totti's fans early in a game Roma won 2-1 against Sporting Lisbon 2-1. Roma are now second behind Manchester United in Group F.

The 31-year-old captain seemed to have recovered from the blow in his right foot, but the persisting pain forced him to quit half an hour later.

Team doctor Stefano Del Signore, however, sounded optimistic, mostly because it was not the same foot Totti seriously hurt in the spring of 2006.

"We bandaged the ankle and used ice," Del Signore said. "Now we wait a couple of days, but we are rather confident."
