In the men's singles, Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, who has not gone beyond the second round in any event since winning the Universiade gold medal, faces arch-rival Przemyslaw Wacha of Poland in the first round.

Both are 1-all in their two previous meetings, with the Pole beating the Thai most recently in the China Open in July.

If Boonsak, the Thai world No 11, gets past the Pole, he will face Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, who has won three titles this season, in the second round.

In the men's doubles, compatriots Sudket Prapakamol and Phattapol Ngernsrisuk take on China's Guo Zhengdong and Xie Zhongbo, who are ranked 22nd in the world. The two teams have never played each other before.

Sudket also has tough battle in the mixed doubles event, where he teams up with Saralee Thungthongkam. The Thai duo will meet world champions Liliyana Natsir and Nova Vidianto of Indonesia in the first round. Natsir and Liliyana have a 7-0 record against the Thais.
