This is because there wouldn't be facilities such as air-conditioning, water heater and washing machine in the local students' dorm. You also have to forget about having your own private restrooms, as dormitories here only have communal restrooms.
I wasn't allowed to stay with Chinese students at first. The lecturer said the university's regulations did not allow Chinese and foreign students to stay together. Believe it or not, the regulation was put in place because Chinese and foreign students apparently always brawl!
The lifestyles of the two groups are very different. Chinese students have a siesta and always read and seriously revise for examinations, because they might have to repeat their studies for another year if they fail the exams. But foreign students love to make friends and always listen to songs and chatting. And they don't have to study repeatedly in class because they can retest.
Anyway, getting back to my life, I was finally allowed to stay in a Chinese students' dormitory … but in a separate zone and room from the local students. And would you believe it? Though we were in the same building but a different zone, as an international student I was still treated a lot better from local students as I still got everything exactly the same as in the foreign students' quarters!
