Korat flood worst in 13 yrs

Nakhon Ratchasima is now suffering from the worst flood in 13 years as more than 200,000 people have lost the use of tap water after flood waters rose over 1.5 metres and damaged an electricity transformer at a water-treatment station on Tuesday night.

Tap-water in the Muang Nakhon Ratchasima municipality will be unavailable for two days while officials install a new transformer.

As of press time, nine schools in the municipality had been closed indefinitely.

Lamtakong waterway was overflowing, inundating thousands of houses along its banks. Flat-bottomed boats and heavy trucks were deployed along flooded roads to help local commuters, as well as patients travelling to the Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.

Under the auspices of HRH Princess Somsavali, free food was provided to flood victims in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday. Several businesses also gave relief items. "We believe the situation should return to normal within five days," Deputy Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Thong-chai Lue-adul said.

Meanwhile, Angthong Governor Sutthana Thivira-panya said many houses in his province were now submerged.

Ayutthaya Governor Cherd-phan na Songkhla said the Royal Irrigation Department told him the level of the Chao Phya would rise by one metre this weekend.
