Concerns over 'Bt1 sex service' chat line

A youth group yesterday called on the police to monitor a telephone chat service that allows men to easily approach young girls for sex services.

The Mirror Foundation said the 02 Chat Line was dubbed the "Bt1 sex service" by some Thai-language newspapers.

Thitima Meeparn, a foundation official, said the new service charged callers a regular fixed-line per-call rate of Bt3, or Bt1 for calls made from public phones. Similar services that have since been suspended charged callers much higher time-variable rates.

The 02 Chat Line also allows callers to leave voice messages, mostly containing sexually provocative content, to introduce themselves before they arrange to meet for sex.

Thitima said girls aged between 13 and 18 were found to have provided sex through the new service. Most of them were found to have extravagant spending habits.

Meanwhile, police arrested a man for raping a 13-year-old girl earlier this month

and blackmailing her for Bt10,000 by threatening to release a video clip depicting the rape.

The suspect, 21, worked as a driver and was identified as Ek. He admitted to having sex with the girl, only once, but denied making a video clip and blackmailing her, police said.

Police said the suspect met with the girl near a "love motel" in the vicinity of Sukhumvit Soi 2, but the girl insisted that he threatened to release the clip unless she brought him Bt10,000.

Police said they were trying to find out if the suspect had done it before.
