Sunai: I kept out of probe

Department of Special Investigation (DSI) director-general Sunai Manomai-udom yesterday denied he influenced an investigation into allegedly false customs declarations by a foreign tobacco company.

Sunai admitted his brother-in-law was managing director of Philip Morris (Thailand) but said he never used his influence during a DSI probe into the company's questionable statements about imports of cigarettes.

He said the investigation involved officials from many departments including customs and public prosecutors, and he only went to a few meetings on the progress of the probe. He dismissed a complaint about his alleged interference in the inquiry as "nonsensical".

Justice Ministry permanent secretary Charan Phakdithanakul blamed media reports for the complaint, saying the media may be held responsible.
