Two Chiang Mai Night Safari elephants died last month and another three are ill as a result of diet, veterinarians said yesterday.
Safari senior official Suphoj Maythaphirat said the elephants ate the "wrong kind of grass".
He said the park was partly to blame for not checking the feed brought in by villagers. Suphoj said insecticide in the grass could be the reason for the deaths and illnesses. Tests are continuing.
Phang Joi and Phang Grandma died late last month after suffering digestive disorders. The three ill elephants are recovering on a special diet.

SSO demurs on computers
The Social Security Office voted yesterday to postpone indefinitely plans to purchase computers worth Bt2.8 billion.
The office reconsidered its earlier approval after the Council of State said it should not purchase computers with its management budget.
The office had already signed a purchase agreement with a private supplier.

A nephew of the millionaire businesswoman who drowned on Monday after she reversed her car into a pond near her home said yesterday he believed her death was an accident.
Thanant Bunyatul said his aunt Mayurin Maytheeworrathanont was never a good driver and scarcely drove.
Honda technicians inspected the sedan that Mayurin was driving and found it in good condition. Lat Phrao police will question the technicians.
