In Khokpo district, Puwanai Sroisomboon, 32, of Tambon Saikhao, was shot dead by a gunman who fired two shots at close range while he was eating with two friends in a local restaurant.

Waemusot Apa Japakiya, 35, a resident of Tambon Prachan in Pattani's Muang district, was shot several times in the head and torso while in his pickup.

In Yaring district, Seulang Che-neh, 33, a resident of Tambon Maloey, was shot in the chest and is in a critical condition. He was riding his motorbike when two gunmen riding pillion on a motorbike next to him opened fire, police said.

In Narathiwat, about six insurgents ambushed a security detail, wounding three defence volunteers and one teacher, as they were on their way back from school in Tambon Bo-ngor in Rangae district.

Police said the insurgents were hiding on the side of the road and fired at the five defence volunteers escorting five teachers to their quarters after school. The two sides engaged in a brief gunfight before the insurgents retreated. Reinforcements rushed to the scene but were unable to track down the attackers.

Jirana Kosal, 35, a teacher at the school, was hit by a bullet on the left arm and three defence volunteers, team-leader Niharong Nimah, Wae-sama-ae Wae-mana and Mahsai-ruding Mae-kong, were hit in the arms and legs. Niharong and Wae-sama-ae were seriously injured and last night under-went surgery, police said.

In a separate incident, a 10-kilogram bomb went off in Chanae district, injuring three Border Patrol Police and destroying the vehicle they were in.

The eight-man BPP team was in a convoy of Humvees conducting a routine patrol.
