AC Milan held to home draw against Catania

Milan - European champions AC Milan were held to a 1-1 home draw Sunday against Catania to keep them seven points behind the Serie A leaders.

Champions Inter Milan went top on 14 points from six games thanks to a 4-1 drubbing Saturday of 10-man Roma, now one point behind Fiorentina, on 12 points after beating 10-man Livorno 3-0 Saturday.

A late and a largely uneventful city derby in Turin saw David Trezeguet score a last-gasp goal for Juventus in a 1-0 win over Torino to secure second place on 13 points.

Earlier, at the Giuseppe Meazza, Milan were held to their fourth draw despite good initial pressure, which produced only a drive from Brazil star Kaka flying wide on 12 minutes.

The guests from Sicily played a tough game in midfield with fast spurts forward and went one up on 26 minutes when Argentinian Jorge Martinez headed home a Jonathan Spinesi cross from the left.

An Andrea Pirlo free kick shook the bar above goalkeeper Ciro Polito, who was lucky on 45 minutes when Filippo Inzaghi fumbled a cross from close range.

The Devils' equalizer was postponed to the 48th minute, when Kaka converted a spot kick awarded for a controversial handball by Ghanian Mark Edusei, who slipped as he tried to block a low cross.

Milan's pressing created few telling actions in the remainder of the game, which left them on seven points with a dismal 6-4 goal difference.

"We'll discuss our things tomorrow morning when we are calmer," said Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"In the second half we tried to split their midfield, but this was not enough. Certainly, this is not a good moment for us. We are rather slow and not careful enough. Today, we played poorly, and it is useless to find excuses."

Palermo, who beat Milan 2-1 in the previous round, took the lead at Empoli but saw the Tuscany hosts come from behind to clinch their first win this season by 3-1.

The visitors from Sicily had Fabio Caserta sent off for a second yellow card on 74 minutes.

In a game between promoted sides, Genoa won 2-1 at Napoli, holding the hosts to 10 points alongside Palermo, while Genoa side Sampdoria crushed Atalanta 3-0 with former Real Madrid striker Antonio Cassano coming on to score the last goal.

Reggina drew 1-1 at home against Lazio, Udinese came from behind to beat Parma 2-1, and Cagliari won 1-0 over visiting Siena.
