Pornthip ethics probe to take time

The Medical Council will need until the end of the year to determinewhether forensic expert Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand breached ethics in a report into the death of former member of Parliament Hangthong Thammawattana.

The council is investigating following the acquittal of Noppadol Thammawattana for the murder of his brother.

Pornthip, the acting director-general of the Central Institute of Forensic Science, testified for the prosecution.

Noppadol has complained to the council about Pornthip, accusing her of dishonestly attempting to frame him in her report of Hangthong's death.

Council secretary Prof Amnaj Kulsalanan said the investigation would take time because it needed to hear from the complainant and Pornthip.

If Pornthip is found to have breached ethics she faces punishment ranging from a written warning to removal of her medical licence. Amnaj promised a fair investigation without favour.

"An investigation by the council of any medical professional is a delicate matter. If a wrong decision is made it could lead to loss of morale and a lack of will to work, but if a doctor has really committed a wrong, the council will punish them," Amnaj said.

Meanwhile, Noppadol said yesterday the council would lose credibility if it tried to protect Pornthip.

He will sue Pornthip for misconduct, seeking Bt1 billion in damages, he said, and will also seek her criminal prosecution.
