Kitikhun, 51, and his friend Wiriya Ali-ishor, 37 were found dead in their wrecked Volvo car on the 265-266 kilometrestretch of the Paholyothin Highway at 3.30pm.
As the accident occurred on a slippery road following rain, police suspect Kitikhun was driving at high speed on an unfamiliar route or dozed off behind the wheel, causing the car to lose control and crash into a roadside tree.
Police also found that though the car had moved 30 metres through the roadside woods before it hit the tree, there had been no attempt to brake.
Police sent the bodies to Sawan Pracharak Hospital, where relatives claimed them for cremation.
Close friend Thanakhom Nuanniran, 48, who owns the sound-recording Amorn Studio in Nonthaburi, said Kitikhun had dropped into the studio on Thursday night to make an advertising spot for the first anniversary of the Country Hut Restaurant in Chiang Mai on October 6.
"I was joking with him that he should not work too hard because we are all getting old," he said, adding that he was in shock after learning about Kitikhun's death.
Another close friend, Jittinart Watcharasathien, one of those behind getting Kitikhun into the entertainment business, said he had just learned about the accident and was in shock because he had just been about to make a phone call to Kitikhun about work.
"As far as I know, Koong drove the car himself, and the friend with him also died. I can't understand it, because Koong didn't drink, didn't smoke and drove carefully
and considerately. He wasn't reckless, because he had a young child," Jittinart said, adding that Kitikhun had been a unique and talented singer.
