Emergency plans drawn for Thais in Burma

The Commerce Ministry has assigned the commerce attache in Burma to closely monitor the situation.

The ministry's spokesman Krisda Piampongsant said the ministry has prepared food and transportation, for emergency evacuation.

The commerce attache early today arranged a meeting with private companies in Burma and informed them to immediately move to the meeting points in case of emergency. The meeting points are the Thai Embassy, PTT Exploration and Production's office, military-attache's residence, and the commerce ambassador's residence. The venues can accommodate upto 400 Thais. Some 200 Thais now stay in Rangoon alone.

"Bilateral trade has continued uninterrupted particularly the border trade. Shops in Rangoon and Mandalay have remained closed. In case of emergency, the Commerce attache will inform the ministry immediately," Krisda said.
