Warrant out for Thai who is implicated in Shin case

The Criminal Court of Southern Bangkok yesterday issued an arrest warrant for Thai-Malaysian businessman Surin Upatkoon for allegedly acting as a nominee for foreigners in his stock holding in Kularb Kaew Co.

Published on September 26, 2007

The warrant was issued on grounds that Surin has failed three times to appear before the police to hear the charges.

Kularb Kaew is one of the companies used by Temasek Holdings of Singapore to acquire Shin Corp from the Shinawatra family.

If found guilty, Surin could face three years in prison or a Bt100,000 to Bt1 million fine.

Police are expected to oppose bail for Surin. Thailand and Malaysia have an extradition treaty with each other.

Surin's lawyer, Pisit Dejchaiyasak, said Surin will turn himself into the police - but did not say when.

Surin's household registration is in Samut Prakan, but he is currently hospitalised in Malaysia.
