Becker Upset Moya at Thailand Open

[TENNIS] Benjamin Becker from Germany upset the tournament's fifth seeded Carlos Moya after defeating the Spanish 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 of the Thailand Open 2007.



The former world No 1 Moya, who has replaced Rafael Nadal in the event, is another Spanish that was sent back home following Feliciano Lopez.

Croat Giant Ivo Karlovic, who stands 208 cm, sent the Spanish heart-throb home, and will play a winner between Thomas Johansson from Sweden and Simon Stadler from Germany who is one of the lucky losers.

Karlovic employed  his explosive serves to beat world No 48 Feliciano Lopez from Spain 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 to join Becker in the second round.

In other matches, Mischa Zverev from Germany took off American Michael Russell 6-4 3-6 6-1, Zeverev's countryman Dominik Meffert defeated another American Amer Delic (USA) 7-5 6-1, French Michael Llodra dismissed Teimuraz Gabashvili from Russia 7-6 (7-2) 7-5, Canadian Frank Dancevic defeated Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina 6-4 6-1 7-6 (7-4) and Nicolas Mahut from France moved past American Zack Fleishman 7-5 6-2. In the men's doubles first round, American Vincent Spadea and Spanish Fernando Verdasco beat American Scott Lipsky and David Martin 6-4 6-3 10-4.

Meanwhile, world No 3 Novak Djokovic broke his fans' hearts by withdrawing from the Thailand Open, citing a back injury. The Serbian is the third player who has pulled out of the competition after Rafel Nadal from Spain and South Korean Hyung-Taik lee and will be fined US$ 40,000 -- The Nation
