Malaysian police rescue girl from cage, detain mum for questioning

KULA LUMPUR -- Malaysian police have detained the mother of a young girl who was left in a cage for the entire night as a form of punishment, a news report said Monday.

A neighbour called police Saturday morning after they claimed to have seen the seven-year old girl locked in the iron cage, which was placed outside the home, since midnight.

Police rushed to the home in the central Negeri Sembilan state and freed the girl, the New Straits Times daily said.

The girl was taken back to the station and later returned to the mother, who was given a stern warning not to repeat the act.

|However, on Sunday police lodged a report against the mother after the girl allegedly told authorities that she had been caged up numerous times, said state head of criminal investigations Huzir Mohamad.

The mother was detained for questioning and the young girl sent for a medical check-up at a local hospital.

"Once we have completed our investigation and have the medical report, we will decide what action to take," said Huzir.

He said the girl would be sent to a welfare home for protection until the investigations are completed.
