Deputy village head injured in gunfight with insurgents

A deputy village head in Narathiwat survived an assassination attempt Sunday after he shot back at his attackers.

Ban Kayae deputy village head Sulaiman Hami, 47, sustained three gunshot wounds.

According to witnesses, Sulaiman stopped by a teashop in Tambon Duzongyor when he noticed that his friends were sitting by the roadside shop. However, as Sulaiman parked his motorcycle and walked toward his friends, a man on the pillion of another motorcycle opened fire on Sulaiman.

Five gunshots were heard before Sulaiman pulled out his pistol and shot back.

The attackers fled the scene after Sulaiman put up a real struggle.

Sulaiman was rushed to Narathiwat Rajanagarindra Hospital with injuries on his left hip and left arm. Police found five casings of ammunition for an assault rifle and 15 cases of ammunition for a pistol at the shooting scene.

Police believed the attack was a part of the ongoing violence in the deep South.

In the neighbouring province of Yala, knife-seller Jan Janthawong, 52, was shot dead while running his knife stall in Muang district as usual.
