ITU Telecom Asia 2008 will showcase the region's latest innovations in information and communications technology (ICT), while a high-level forum will explore and debate
key areas central to
the growth of the Asia-Pacific telecommunications industry, the ITU said in a release.
Bangkok was selected as the venue following a competitive bidding process in which a number of prospective hosts participated.
It was chosen on the basis of a number of criteria, including financial viability.
The ITU is the leading United Nations agency for ICT issues and a global focal point for governments and the private sector in developing networks and services.
ICT Minister Sitthichai Pookaiyaudom said he hoped the ITU would also appoint Thailand to be
the host of Telecom Asia 2010.
The ITU Telecom Asia fair is held every two years. The fair in Thailand is expected to generate cash flow of about Bt3 billion in related areas like hotels and transport.
