Shrimp image crisis
The Thai Shrimp Association has urged the government to implement measures that protect the export image of Thai shrimp. The move comes after other Asian countries found a chemical-residue problem in shrimp products, some of which have been reprocessed in Thailand.
President Somsak Paneetatyasai said yesterday that shrimp from some Asian countries had been rejected from importing countries due to chemical residue, particularly nitrofuran. Some rejected shrimp have been exported to many countries for reprocessing and re-export, including Thailand. This will cause export quality problems for the Kingdom.
