Favouritism denied

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont yesterday said that favouritism had nothing to do with four proposed laws designed to separate soldiers' pay and provident funds from the civil service pay scale.

"The legislations involve fiscal issues that need to be scrutinised by many parties and I see little chance of their passage because of time constraints," he said in reference to the remaining term of his government.

Surayud said he would not place the four bills on a legislative fast-track.

Military observers see the bills as an attempt to allow leeway to boost soldiers' pay and benefits above those applicable to the civil service.
